How Often Should I Paint My Home?
Paint can make or break the look of a home. A quality paint job freshens your home, breathing new life into rooms, making them feel more alive and filled with possibility. But, after you’ve painted once, how long do you have until you need to hire a painter again — or break out the brushes yourself? Here’s a look at how long you can wait, including how often you should paint your home’s interior, exterior and ceilings.
How Often Should You Paint Your Home’s Exterior?
It depends on the material you’re painting. If it’s wood siding, plan on painting every five years or so. The type of climate you live in matters, too. Harsh climates might require painting every 3 years, while more temperate climates might help paint jobs on wood siding last seven years or more. Stucco and aluminum siding can last about five years, too. New materials like cement fiberboard can go much longer — up to 15 years. While a quality paint job on brick should last 15 to 20 years.
Of course, you can maximize the useful life of any paint job by taking care of it. Preventative maintenance can add years to the life of a coat of paint.
Your Home’s Interior?
This depends mostly on the wear and tear a certain part of the house experiences. Hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms tend to need paint before the rest of the house. Count on getting a minimum of three years out of these spaces and five years at a maximum. Bedrooms and living areas tend to get much less wear and tear, which means you can go five to seven years without painting.
Your Ceilings?
Of course, ceilings are touched far less often and get much less wear and tear than the walls throughout your house. You can generally count on newly painted ceilings staying fresh for up to 10 years.
