Shutters

Your home’s shutters are an important architectural element that defines the look and character of the house.

Shutters

Homeowners should take the time to visually inspect their shutters at least once a year for any signs of damage. Yet shutter replacement can be an expensive proposition. Even if they show signs of wear and tear, that doesn’t necessarily mean they need to be discarded. In many cases, a little shutter repair is all that’s required. With that in mind, how can you tell when it’s time for new ones and when it’s time to repair what’s already there?

Wooden Shutters

Pine or cedar models give a house a traditional look, but they require a bit more maintenance than other choices. When inspecting them, take them down and check for any signs of cracking or rotting. The key is to look for instances where the structural integrity of the entire piece is failing. If they are solid except for a minor crack or a small amount of rot, you may be able to patch them. Wood filler or putty can take care of most cosmetic issues with pine or cedar. If paint is peeling or bubbling, sanding and repainting may be all that’s needed.

However, if there is extensive damage that makes them weak or flimsy, they should be replaced.

Vinyl Shutters

Many homeowners prefer vinyl options because they are relatively inexpensive and maintenance-free. Nevertheless, they should be inspected regularly to ensure they look and perform their best. The most common problem is fading. This can happen over time as they are exposed to constant sunlight. What many people do not know is that vinyl can be painted to renew the color or give it a new look. Experienced professionals have the expertise to choose the proper vinyl-safe paint for your shutters.

Although wood can be repaired, cracks in vinyl typically mean it’s time to replace it. This is mitigated somewhat by the fact that these shutters are less expensive.

The Hardware

Hinges, tracks and locks should be checked on any type of shutter. If they appear to be clean and in good working condition, they can be left as-is. Though if you find rust, clean them and apply a new protective coating. If the rust is extensive, consider replacing the hardware entirely.

Exterior window shutter repair is crucial for keeping your house safe from damaging wind and rain. With these tips, you may be able to keep your shutters in good shape and save some money in the process.
