How to Choose Kitchen Paint Colors for Your Walls and Cabinets
With all the time we traditionally spend indoors during the winter months, plus add the COVID quarantine to that and we feel like we NEVER leave our homes these days. And the room in the house that generally gets the most use is our kitchens—whether it be for meal preparation, schoolwork, home office, family game time, it is the hardest working space in our homes. So, during these shorter winter days, it is not surprising to find people clamoring to brighten up their kitchen walls and cabinets.
The most popular trend in kitchens over the past few years has been white cabinets, which is a classic look that never goes out of style. We have also seen the application of richer colors on perimeter cabinets and islands, and this trend continues to gain in popularity with the use of bolder, brighter, and energetic colors. The most popular colors to use in kitchens right now are blues and greens in every possible hue and intensity. But, if you love another hue, (say yellow), don’t let popularity limit your imagination. As long as you are not looking to sell your home, let your heart be your guide—love your home and make it yours.
Personally, one of my favorite looks is when walls and upper cabinets are the same or very similar in color. This helps the kitchen to feel more like a living space by blurring the lines between walls and cabinets, creating a continuous wall of color, and allowing your eye to flow more easily through space.
Still, another popular trend in kitchens is the use of what I call “pretty” colors that in the past would more often be reserved for bedrooms, such as light blues and sea greens. You don’t have to live at the beach anymore to use these soft watery tones in your kitchen.

The sites have a “help” feature with easy-to-follow instructions. Keep in mind while these online sites provide excellent opportunities to view specific colors, there are obvious limitations to their accuracy—all screens modify colors to varying degrees, your lighting conditions will not be the same as those featured on the sites’ images, and colors look different based upon the other colors around them. Overall, they offer a good way to explore colors and ideas.
