How Can I Make My Room Look Larger With Paint Color?

Less Bright Coloring is Key

Bright paint colors advance to the eye, making walls feel as though they are coming towards you. Particularly bright reds and yellows are the worst offenders. Their vibrancy can overwhelm a small room.

Stick to Cool Tones

Blues, greens and violets recede to the eye. Paint colors that recede make walls appear further away, and less prominent in a room.

Go Dark

Contrary to what many think, a dark paint color can expand a room. I tell clients “think of the night sky”. A dark navy, gray, or brown paint can add great depth and make a small room appear richer and larger.

Avoid Painting Accent Walls

Accent walls accentuate the edges of a room. They can make a ceiling feel lower and a room feel shorter. They can also make a room feel “busy”. If you have a large room where square footage isn’t at a premium, go for it. But in small spaces, steer clear.
